Orange Heat Alert: How to Work Safely in High Temperatures
From tomorrow, an orange weather alert will be in effect in the central and southern parts of the Netherlands. Temperatures may reach 35°C or higher. For employees working outdoors or performing heavy physical labor, this means additional safety measures are necessary.
According to the KNMI (Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute), extreme heat can be dangerous. During an orange alert, anyone can experience health problems caused by dehydration or overheating. People with vulnerable health conditions, older adults, and employees performing physically demanding work are at greater risk. Through the National Heat Plan, the RIVM (National Institute for Public Health and the Environment) provides clear guidance to help prevent health issues.
Working in the Heat Is Not Without Risk
A hot working day places significant strain on the body. Physical labor, working in direct sunlight, or having little access to shade can quickly increase this strain. Symptoms often start small. Someone may develop a headache, feel dizzy, or experience nausea. These are warning signs to stop working immediately and seek a cooler environment.
For outdoor work, it is advisable to start as early as possible in the morning. Where possible, tasks should be adjusted or divided among workers.
Safety Measures for Working in Hot Conditions
AB Midden Nederland advises employees to take heat seriously and act in time. The following measures are important:
- Drink water frequently.
- Do not wait until you feel thirsty.
- Work in the shade as much as possible.
- Ensure there is shade at the workplace.
- Take extra breaks in a cool location.
- Wear protective clothing, a cap or hat, and sunglasses.
- Use sunscreen with at least SPF 30.
- Reapply sunscreen every two hours.
- Avoid heavy work during the hottest part of the day.
- Report any symptoms immediately to your supervisor or contact person.
If you experience dizziness, headaches, nausea, or muscle cramps, seek a cool place immediately. Do not continue working while experiencing symptoms. This increases the risk of overheating.
Extra Attention for Outdoor and Agricultural Work
When working outdoors, avoiding the sun is often difficult. However, a sheltered workplace can make a significant difference. Consider working under a canopy, installing sun protection, or moving tasks to a cooler time of day.
On agricultural farms, attention must also be given to animals. During high temperatures, animals need sufficient shade, ventilation, and clean drinking water. Animals grazing in fields are particularly vulnerable to heat stress if no shelter is available.
