Why cycling every day makes you happier and healthier!
Today is Bike to Work Day — the perfect time to reflect on the benefits of hopping on your bike instead of taking the car.
We asked our colleague Marta Kroonenberg, a planner at the Bunschoten office, why she bikes to work every day. Her story shows that cycling is not just practical but a gift for both body and mind.
Why do you bike to work every day, Marta?
“I live in Bunschoten-Spakenburg, so I’m close to work. It’s only a few kilometers. I really enjoy cycling. With a child, it can be tricky to leave at the same time every day, but I try to head out at 8:15 each morning.”
What motivates you to take the bike, besides the short distance?
“Of course, it’s less pleasant when the weather is bad, but cycling really wakes me up in the morning. And after work, on my way home, that 15-minute ride helps me clear my mind, process the day, and arrive home refreshed. When working from home, you immediately switch from work to your private life, and I find it harder to mentally transition. Cycling helps me find that space and calm.”
Do you cycle in your free time too?
“I used to cycle a lot! Now a bit less because my little one is still too small for the bike seat. I used to do everything by bike, like grocery shopping. But once he fits in the seat, I’ll definitely cycle more in my free time again.”
Do you see cycling as your workout?
“No, I don’t consider cycling to work a substitute for working out. I exercise three times a week — I used to do it daily!”
Do you use an electric bike or the AB Midden Nederland bike lease plan?
“No, I have a regular bike that I’ve had for a long time, precisely because I love pedaling hard. But I do think it’s great that AB Midden Nederland offers that plan. It can encourage others to get a good bike for commuting.”
Did you grow up cycling, Marta?
“I’m Polish, and back then, I used to walk to school and work. I only had one job where I had to take the bus. Even if it was three kilometers, I walked. For the same reason I now cycle: it just feels good and is healthy too. I had a bike in Poland, but I didn’t use it much because the infrastructure wasn’t ideal back then. Now that’s changed — there are bike racks and more bike lanes everywhere, making it safer and easier.”
Would you recommend it to colleagues?
“Absolutely! It’s good for your body and mind. Go for it!”
Marta’s story captures the essence: cycling is not just a practical choice, but a way to clear your mind, stay active, and consciously end your workday. Plus, it helps reduce CO₂ emissions, contributing to a more sustainable world.
So, what are you waiting for? Hop on your bike today and feel the difference!
